FAFSA Season is Open: New Graduation RequirementTemporada de FAFSA esta abierto: Nuevo requerimiento de graduación

This is to inform you of a new graduation requirement this year regarding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid. In an effort the support students post-secondary planning, the state of Illinois is requiring every student to fill out the FAFSA or Alternative Application as a part of their college/university planning.

You may be wondering about the following questions:

“Which one should I fill out?”

FAFSA is for students who are:

  • Eligible U.S. citizens (born in the U.S.), OR
  • Eligible non-citizens (“green card,” permanent residency in the U.S.)

ALTERNATIVE APPLICATION is for students who are:

  • Non-eligible non-citizens (more info in directions below)

“Where do I find these applications?” or “How do I start this application?”

DIRECTIONS FOR FAFSA:

  1. Start by creating a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID now at: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch
  2. Fill out the application on or after October 1, 2020 at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
  3. Deadlines to receive financial aid for next school year: * State Deadline: ASAP after 10/1/2020 * College Deadline: Check with college.

DIRECTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVE APP:

  1. Fill out the application on or after October 1, 2020 at https://studentportal.isac.org/alternativeapp
  2. The pre-screening questions in this application will help you determine if you are a qualifying undocumented or transgender student who is not eligible for federal financial aid.
  3. Deadline to receive MAP Grant for next school year: * ASAP on or after 10/1/2020 @12pm—some funds are first come, first served

“Who should I talk to if I need help?”

Ms. Martha Gutierrez is a representative from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).

Make an appointment for a Tuesday or Thursday on Calendly: https://calendly.com/martha-gutierrez-1/isac or call/text (630) 946-3688 to contact Ms. Gutierrez as well.

“I do not plan to enroll directly into any college or university after high school graduation. Who should I talk to regarding this graduation requirement?”

If you feel that you do not need to submit either application, email your school counselor to file a waiver with the Illinois State Board of Education, specifically if you are:

  • Entering the military directly after high school, OR
  • You have another reason to complete neither of the applications mentioned

“Where can I get more information on FAFSA?”

EAHS will also be offering workshops throughout the academic school year to help support students in their post-secondary planning. The first workshop will be on Wednesday, October 14th at 6:00pm. ISAC rep, Ms. Martha Gutierrez, will be presenting on FAFSA and there will be time for questions. Please remind your student to check their school email through Outlook O365 for any school communications. Please also have your student follow their counselor’s Google Classroom for updates and postings regarding the school year.

 

Esto es para informales sobre un nuevo requerimiento de graduación este ano que tiene que ver con la Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes (FAFSA) y la Aplicación Alterna para Ayuda Financiera de Illinois.  En un esfuerzo para apoyar los planes de estudiantes en estudios superiores, el estado de Illinois está requiriendo que cada estudiante complete las formas de FAFSA o la Aplicación Alterna como parte de su plan para universidad.

Es posible que tengan las siguientes preguntas:

“¿Cual forma debería llenar?”

FAFSA es para estudiantes que son:

  • Ciudadanos elegibles de EEUU (nacidos o naturalizados) O
  • no-ciudadanos elegibles (‘green card’, residencia permanente en los EEUU.)

APLICACION ALTERNA es para estudiantes que son:

  • No-ciudadanos no elegibles (mas información en las direcciones que siguen)

“¿Dónde encuentro estas aplicaciones?” o “¿Cómo empiezo esta aplicación?”

INSTRUCCIONES PARA LA FAFSA:

  1. Empieza creando una ID de Federal Student Aid (FSA) aquí: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch
  2. Llene la aplicación el primero de octubre o después usando este sitio https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
  3. Las fechas topes para recibir ayuda financiera para el ano que sigue: *Fecha tope Estatal: lo mas pronto después del 1ero de octubre 2020 * Fecha tope de Universidad: Cheque con cada escuela individual 

INSTRUCCIONES PARA LA APLICACION ALTERNA:

  1. Llene la aplicación el primero de octubre o después usando este sitio https://studentportal.isac.org/alternativeapp
  2. Las preguntas preliminares en esta aplicación van a ayudarle a determinar si eren un estudiante valido sin documentos o transgenero que no ese legible para recibir ayuda federal financiera.
  3. Fecha tope para recibir una beca MAP para el año escolar que sigue: *Los más pronto posible el primero de octubre, 2020 – algunos fondos son limitados y para los que lleguen primero.

“¿Con quien hablo si necesito ayuda?”

La Srta. Martha Gutiérrez es una representante de la Comisión de Asistencia Estudiantil de Illinois (ISAC).

Haga una cita para un martes o jueves en Calendy: https://calendly.com/martha-gutierrez-1/isac o llame o mande mensaje a (630) 946-3688 para contactarla también.

“No planeo continuar mi educación inmediatamente después de graduarme de la secundaria. ¿Con quién debería hablar sobre este requerimiento de graduación?”

Si siente que no necesita someter cualquiera de estas aplicaciones, mande email a su consejero de la escuela para llenar una forma con la Junta de Educación del Estado de Illinois, específicamente si:

  • Va a entrar a las fuerzas militares inmediatamente después de completar la secundaria, O
  • Si tiene otra razón para no completar cualquiera de estas dos aplicaciones

“¿Dónde puedo conseguir más información sobre la FAFSA?”

EAHS también va a ofrecer talleres durante el año escolar académico para ayudar y apoyar a los estudiantes con sus planes después de la secundaria. El primer taller va ser el miércoles, 14 de octubre a las 6:00pm. Representante de ISAC, Srta. Martha Gutiérrez, va a presentar sobre la FAFSA y va haber tiempo para preguntas. Por favor recuérdale a su estudiante que deberían de checar su correo de la escuela usando Outlook O365 para ver cualquier comunicación de la escuela. Por favor también informe su estudiante que deberían de seguir el Google Classroom de su consejero para recibir información durante el año escolar.
