Students participate in Special Olympics Summer State GamesStudents participate in Special Olympics Summer State Games

On June 15 and 16, District 131 students participated in the Special Olympics Summer State Games at Illinois State University.

Athletes who earned gold medals at the April regionals qualified for the State competition. On Friday, Yuritza Sanchez earned the gold medal with a standing long jump distance of 1.67 meters, and Rob Mata earned a 5th place finish with a standing long jump distance of 1.23 meters! Then on Saturday, EASD 131 students earned two silvers and a fourth place finish in track and field events before the afternoon outdoor events were cancelled due to a heat advisory. Juan Ramirez earned a silver medal in the 25-meter walker assisted race with a time of 38.59 seconds. Damaris Ramos earned a silver medal in mini javelin with a distance of 9.91 meters, and Esteven Perez earned fourth place in softball throw with a distance of 12.28 meters.

Two students, Manny Marrufo and Annamarie Sabella, were unable to compete due to the weather cancellations, but everyone was a winner for East Aurora!
