DECA shines at state competitionDECA shines at state competition

East Aurora DECA recently competed at the 2018 Illinois DECA Career Development Conference (State Competition).  Fifteen of the 24 students who competed and advanced from the West Suburban DECA Sectionals were among the 1,200 participants hoping to advance to the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, GA this April.

East Aurora DECA was recognized by DECA Nationals for their achievements in Chapter Campaigns in the fall.  Illinois DECA also recognized the chapter for giving back to the community “thorough philanthropy and service” to the Aurora Noon Lions Club, Feed My Starving Children and the Salvation Army, among other activities.

Other accolades for the chapter included ten competency awards, showing event expertise, to Gaby Gutierrez  and Carla Ortiz for their two role plays in Sports and Entertainment Team.  Carla also received competency for her cluster exam.  Jazmin Jefferson received competency for her two role plays in Food Marketing Service.  Kylie Henry received competency for her two role plays in the new Entrepreneur Individual event.  Carolina Herrera received competency for her second Human Resources Management role play.  Naomi Gutierrez received competency for her first role play in Hotel and Lodging Marketing.  Yohana Alcala and Cindy Del Cid for their second role play in Hospitality Services.  And Alondra Cervantes and Sania Henry received competencies for their two role plays and cluster exams. 

Sania and Naomi received their first place recognition for the Gold Re-certification for School Based Enterprise based upon Paw Place, earning the opportunity to compete at ICDC.  Sania and Alondra placed fourth with their Community Service Project for the Visit with the Easter Bunny at Phillips Park and Yohana and Cindy placed seventh in the same event for their work with the Forgotten Teens Project.  Alondra, Yohana and Cindy will be able to attend and work the THRIVE academy at ICDC for their success.

Finally, advisor Mark Lyons was named an Outstanding Advisor by DECA Inc. for his work with the East Aurora chapter. 

Congratulations to all! DECA is open to all East Aurora students and meets on Thursday mornings at 6:45 a.m. in Room 203.  Students do not need to be in a business class in order to be part of the club.
