For the first time in the history of the journalism program at East Aurora High School, a student has medaled in state competition. Alexa Martinez not only medaled but took the gold, placing first over all in the category of Editorial Cartooning. After placing 2nd for the past two years in Sectional competition to qualify for the IHSA State Journalism Finals, on April 25th Martinez stepped onto the Heartland Community College campus in Normal, IL, and ended up walking away with the big prize.
“I was totally surprised and honored to receive this recognition,” Martinez reported to the Aurora Patch. “It is something that I didn’t expect.” Martinez’ progress as a student journalist has been guided by the steady hand of EAHS English teacher, James Ross. Her legacy is already apparent, as the student cartoonist was joined in state competition by fellow Tomcat, junior Tyree Robins. While Robins alos placed second in Regional competition, in Review Writing, he did not medal at State this year. Following in Martinez’ footsteps, hopefully Robins and his follow Tomcat journalists will be hoisting their own medals in 2026.
