The Puerto Rican community has long made its presence known in the City of Aurora. Founded in 1972 and later formally established and known today as the Aurora Puerto Rican Cultural Council (APRCC). This council represents the commitment to Puerto Rican heritage, diversity and community education within Aurora.
The City of Aurora Mayor, Richard C. Irvin designated the week beginning July 21 through July 30, 2023 as Aurora Puerto Rican Heritage Week. Many activities have been planned this week throughout the community. Part of this city-wide recognition of the contributions of the APRCC was the naming of two familiar faces as this year’s WEPA Heritage Award recipients.
Lisa and Wilson Morales were awarded the Working for Excellence and Progress in Aurora (WEPA) Heritage Award on Friday, July 21 by Irvin. The Mayor called attention to the dedication of each of these leaders from District 131 to the Puerto Rican community in Aurora, whose involvement in APRCC events and activism has gone above and beyond in moving the city of Aurora’s celebrations of Puerto Rican diversity and contributions forward.
Both educators have worked in District 131 for over 30 years and hold a special place in the East Aurora 131 community.
Over three decades in the service of East Aurora’s children and continued involvement in the Puerto Rican community in Aurora exemplify both Lisa and Wilson Morales’ embodiment of that joyous and powerful phrase–WEPA!
We invite the entire District 131 community to share in our congratulations and thanks to these staff members for helping to elevate East Aurora every day.
