From Solito to Solidarity: Javier Zamora Inspires East AuroraDe “Solito” a la Solidaridad: Javier Zamora Inspira a East Aurora

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, memoirist, poet, and speaker Javier Zamora came to East Aurora High School to talk about his award-winning memoir, “Solito”, where he explores his own harrowing journey to the US as an unaccompanied nine-year-old that gives a unique and unforgettable glimpse into the realities of child migration.

In his talks, he shared the story of his trek to reunite with his family, and how therapy and writing were able to help him heal from the trauma that has haunted him ever since.

Families and community members were inspired by his story and many had Zamora autograph their own copy of “Solito”.

Our East Aurora High School Survivor Literature students and teachers Shane Gillespie and Sarah Gillespie organized this event which was the precursor to the upcoming “My Way to Freedom” 23 mile walk to highlight the topic of immigration and connect with Javier Zamora’s journey to America. The walk will start at 8:00 a.m. on May 3, 2025 at Wilder Park in downtown Aurora and finish at the not-for-profit Centro de información in Elgin(https://centrodeinformacion.org/). Come on out and cheer them on before they start their walk!
