Despite only being founded four years ago, Girls Wrestling has already become one of the most dominant sports programs in the storied history of East Aurora Athletics. On January 25, at Streamwood High School, the East Aurora Girls’ Wrestling Tomcats won their third consecutive Upstate 8 Conference title. The team that started with just 17 athletes in 2021, now heads to IHSA regional competition having had over 50 girls participate in the program this season. The regional tournament will take place over the weekend at Hinsdale South High School, ending on Saturday, February 1. Winners there will move on to Sectional competition on February 9, and then potentially to compete for a State title after that.
Coach Ryan Mick has been with the program since its inception. “Each championship is special, but this conference championship is [extra] special because the seniors this year are the first 4-year group of wrestlers. They have helped build this program. They have been great role models not only on the mat, but off of it as well.”
It was those seniors that led the way to another conference championship with Noreidy Ruiz placing first in conference at her class, while Ruby Becerra and Yoheadi Contreras took 2nd place in their respective classes. Britany Chavarria placed 3rd. According to Mick, several of his athletes are looking to continue their wrestling careers in college. The future continues to look bright for the program, however, with several younger wrestlers placing in the tournament, including 9th grader Joselyn Llanos Ontiveros who earned a second place finish. Mick, assisted by fellow coaches, Frank Davison, Raphael Rodriguez, Orlando Garcia, Gonzalo Magana, Israel Vazquez, Saniya Berry, Ixzayana Cruz, and Ulises Apantenco, may have a 4th consecutive conference championship in their future.
