“Hello my beautifuls. Good morning my handsomes,” her voice rings out through the hallways like it has for the past 20 plus years, greeting and encouraging East Aurora High School Students. With over 40 years in the district, serving in nearly every conceivable staff role from Lunch Room Supervisor, to Custodian, to Bus Driver, to the role that she has come to define, Pupil Personnel Assistant (PPA), Mary Taylor is an East Aurora institution. And yet the work that Mary does at school, while invaluable, is also the type of work that is frequently overlooked or undervalued in school settings, particularly by students themselves.
That is why it came as such a surprise, and an honor for Taylor when she found out she had been recognized as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). According to NSHSS, “This honor recognizes exemplary educators whose passion and devotion inspire their students to grow and develop as scholars, leaders and citizens.” Taylor, always the model of humility, doesn’t do the things she does for accolades or acknowledgement but rather “because of the passion I have, but our students are genuine and when it comes from them, it warms my heart.”
When Junior Tomcat, Makala Petersmark was given the opportunity by NSHSS to nominate someone for this distinction, only one name came immediately to mind: Mary Taylor. “She’s phenomenal,” says Petersmark of Taylor. “She’s a helpful person. Since my freshman year, she has always been there to listen.” While Petersmark says Taylor will always lend a sympathetic ear, she also holds the students accountable. Petersmark appreciates Taylor’s honesty too. “She’ll tell you when you’re wrong,” while always being encouraging about attendance, timeliness, and academic effort.
Taylor says of the NSHSS recognition, “I felt very honored and sentimental. I love my position.” And while patrolling the hallways, encouraging students to be where they are supposed to be, can be challenging and thankless work, Taylor assures “the good outweighs the bad.” Kiel Douglass, Division Chair for Behavior and Safety, oversees the effort of all the PPAs at the high school. He also recognizes Taylor’s passion and commitment to East Aurora students. “She cares for each one wanting the best education for them. She has maintained a positive and strong legacy in our school district and we are glad to have her.”
Me encanta mi puesto”.
