Every year the City of Aurora’s African American Heritage Advisory Board recognizes individuals within the community who have made and continue to make an impact in the Aurora community. Many great leaders have had the honor of this distinguished award. This year’s recipient is none other than Superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Norrell.

Dr. Norrell was surprised at the December 19 Board of Education meeting where members of the African American Advisory Board were present. Aurora Mayor, Richard Irvin and Chief Communications Officer for the City of Aurora, Clayton Muhammad signed up to speak and surprised Superintendent Norrell with the honor of this year’s distinguished award.

“The Heritage Board is in its 17th year and has been committed to being that connection between Aurora’s black community and the Mayor’s office, “Muhammad said. On February 24, 2023, the Henry Cowherd Scholarship recipient will be announced at the annual heritage dinner where Superintendent Dr. Norrell will also be recognized as the African American Leader of the Year.

Superintendent Norrell has led East Aurora School District 131 as superintendent since 2018 and has served as the central figure in supporting the families, the staff and the East Aurora community. Her leadership, commitment and respect are exemplary. A huge congratulations to our fearless leader on this well-deserved recognition.

Cada año, la Junta Consultiva de Herencia Afroamericana de la Ciudad de Aurora reconoce a personas de la comunidad que han tenido y siguen teniendo un impacto en la comunidad de Aurora. Muchos grandes líderes han tenido el honor de recibir este premio distinguido. Este año, la ganadora es nada menos que la Superintendente, Dra. Jennifer Norrell.

La Dra. Norrell fue sorprendida en la reunión de la Junta de Educación que tuvo lugar el 19 de diciembre, donde estaban presentes miembros de la Junta Consultiva Afroamericana. El Alcalde de Aurora, Richard Irvin y el Jefe de Comunicaciones de la Ciudad de Aurora, Clayton Muhammad se apuntaron a hablar y sorprendieron a la Superintendente Norrell con el honor de recibir el premio distinguido de este año.

“La Junta de Herencia está en su 17º año y se ha comprometido a ser esa conexión entre la comunidad afroamericana de Aurora y la oficina del alcalde”, dijo Muhammad. El 24 de febrero de 2023, se anunciará el ganador de la beca Henry Cowherd en la cena anual de la herencia, en la que también se reconocerá al Superintendente Dr. Norrell como Líder afroamericano del año.

La superintendente Norrell ha dirigido el Distrito Escolar 131 del Este de Aurora como superintendente desde el año 2018 y ha servido como la figura central para apoyar a las familias, el personal y la comunidad del Este de Aurora. Su liderazgo, compromiso y respeto son ejemplares. Felicidades a nuestra líder valiente por este reconocimiento bien merecido.
