On November 14 and 15 the East Aurora High School Theatre Department presented three performances of Almost, Maine. Almost, Maine is a comedy, written by John Cariani in 2004. The play is comprised of nine vignettes focusing on common themes of love and loss, all taking place in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. Almost, Maine is one of the most popularly staged plays in U.S. high schools over the past decade.
Having nine short plays, generally with two distinct characters in each, within the larger framework of the production meant there were a lot of opportunities for Tomcat performers. There were not just more roles overall, but also more opportunities for East Aurora thespians to stretch themselves in multiple parts over the course of a performance. East Aurora Drama Faculty member, Ms. Karen Ball, had the honor of selecting and directing this production of Almost, Maine. Ball, who has been an important advocate for the Dramatic Arts, both across the district, but also very much at the High School, is in her first year as the official primary drama instructor at EAHS. In her director notes, Ball writes, “This production became a wonderful lesson in creativity and courage. Our small but mighty cast took on multiple characters, jumped between scenes and identities, and discovered the humor and heart that runs through this patchwork of love stories. Watching these students stretch themselves — to embody someone else’s shoes (sometimes literally!) — has been a reminder of what theatre is really for: connection, discovery, and the joy of being found.”
Staging any production at East Aurora High School is a tremendously collaborative effort. The cast consisted of performers from all grade levels. All technical aspects of the performances from design to execution were made possible by the contributions of student artists and technicians. Students from the East High Technical Theatre program contributed their efforts as did Ms. Sarah Felgenhauer’s Sculpture students. Ball concludes her Director’s notes, writing, “I couldn’t be prouder of this cast and crew for finding each other, finding this story, and inviting you to share in the magic of Almost, Maine. Thank you for supporting our program, our students, and the beautiful, messy, heartfelt act of being found.”
