Twenty-two East Aurora High School students who are members of the after school club FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) recently participated in the FCCLA state competition in Springfield, Illinois.  

Students competed in fondant cake decorating, frosting cake decorating, salad, cookie, relish tray, environmental ambassador, life event planning and entrepreneurship.

All students walked away with medals, with many students earning top honors including two who won scholarships.  

In two events, students qualified for Nationals in Atlanta at the end of June, with another still competing in a cooking event who could also qualify for Nationals.

Culinary Arts

  • German Casas – Silver
  • Joseline Carbajal – currently positioned in 2nd in state of Illinois (one more round to see if she is a National Delegate; Scholarship to Culinary Institute of America renewable $1,500 per year or $6,000 over four-year program.)

Fondant Cakes

  • Diana Jimenez – Gold
  • Arik Buenabad – Silver
  • Gloria Dieguez – MOST OUTSTANDING – $6,000 dollar scholarship – Gold
  • Cristal Leon – Gold (2nd highest score in her catagory)
  • Jennifer Gonzalez – Gold

Frosted Cakes

  • Isabel Mayana – Silver
  • Carina Rios – Silver
  • Cecilia Calancha – Gold

Cookie

  • Jose Xique – Silver

Salads

  • Luis Barrera – Silver

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is the Career and Technical Student Organization for Family and Consumer Science students. FCCLA is a national student organization that helps young men and women become better leaders in their families, careers and communities. Students learn skills for life: planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication.

Students were led by Ms. Kristin Doucette, East Aurora High School HERO and FCCLA Adviser and Culinary Arts/Restaurant Management Instructor.
