Tomcats take oath as student board membersTomcats se juramentan como miembros estudiantiles de la Junta Educativa

At its September 3 meeting, the Board of Education welcomed two East Aurora High School seniors as student representatives to the Board for the 2019-20 school year.

Executive assistant Lisa Morales administered the oath to Tomcats Nancy Bravo and Michael Martinez.

“Positive attitude. Strong work ethic. Intellectual ability. One of the best and brightest.”

These are words Nancy’s teachers have use to describe her.

In her first three years at East High, Nancy has immersed herself not only in academics, but in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. For three years, Nancy has been a member of the marching band and pep band, and now serves as a section leader; and for three years she has ran cross country, and track & field, and now serves as varsity co-captain for both; For the past two years, Nancy has served as a pit orchestra member for the musical, and is a member of the Spanish Honors Society, and Student Athlete Society.

Nancy is involved in her local church, and on a regular basis provides community service to organizations in need.

Nancy decided to pursue a student board member position because, in her words, she has always had a passion for helping people, and would like to apply this passion to her own school district by doing her part in bettering it.

Nancy Bravo attended Hermes Elementary, Simmons Middle School, and is now a senior at East High.

Michael Martinez

Ms. Jessica Kelner, Michael’s former English teacher, said that Michael is a student who stands out because he values his education and is intrinsically motivated to succeed. Kelner added that “Michael consistently demonstrates leadership skills, like responsibility and dedication, beyond that of his peers.”

Michael is an officer for the Tri-M Honors Society, was a captain for the East High baseball team, serves as a peer tutor for Upward Bound, is ALSO a section leader for the marching band, and is a member of the National Honors Society.

Michael is a national co-president for the Boys to Men organization, and served as a store employee in the Paw Place his freshman year. 

Michael decided to pursue a student board member position because, in his words, he knows “the school board has the power to help students”, and he “would like to serve in this position so he can represent the Tomcat student body in which he is so proud to be a part of.”

Martinez attended Rollins Elementary, Fred Rodgers Magnet Academy, and now is a senior at East High.

The student board members will begin serving at the Board of Education meetings on September 16.  

Either Bravo or Martinez will attend all board meetings. They will serve as advisory, non-voting members of the Board of Education for one school year.

Bravo and Martinez will give the board a student perspective in discussions. They will report to the board about student activities, and report back to East High student leadership on behalf of the board. 

En su reunión del 3 de septiembre, la Junta Educativa dio la bienvenida a dos estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria de East Aurora como representantes a la junta para el año escolar 2019-20.

Estas son palabras que los maestros de Nancy usan para describirla.

En sus primeros tres años en la Secundaria East, Nancy se ha sumergido no solo en la parte académica, sino en una amplia variedad de actividades extracurriculares. Por tres años, Nancy ha sido miembro de la banda de desfile, y ahora se desempeña como líder de su sección; y por tres años ella corrió en campo traviesa y pista y campo, y ahora se desempeña como la co-capitana de ambos equipos; Por los últimos dos años, Nancy se ha desempeñado como miembro de la orquesta de teatro del musical, y es miembro de la Sociedad de Honores de Español, y la Sociedad de Atlética Estudiantil.

Nancy está envuelta en su iglesia local, y de manera regular, brinda servicio comunitario para las organizaciones necesitadas.

Nancy decidió buscar un puesto como miembro estudiantil de la junta porque, en sus palabras, ella siempre ha tenido una pasión por ayudar a la gente, y le gustaría aplicar esta pasión a su propio distrito escolar haciendo su parte para mejorarlo.

Nancy Bravo asistió a la primaria Hermes, la Escuela Intermedia Simmons, y ahora es senior en la Secundaria East.

Michael Martinez

La Srta. Jessica Kelner, que fue maestra de inglés de Michael, dijo que Michael era un estudiante que sobre sale porque valora su educación y está motivado intrínsecamente para ser exitoso. Kelner añadió que “Michael demuestra habilidades de liderazgo de forma constante, como la responsabilidad y dedicación, más allá de la de sus compañeros.”

Michael es un oficial para la Sociedad de Honores Tri-M, fue capitán del equipo de béisbol de la Secundaria East, se desempeñó como tutor estudiantil para Upward Bound, y TAMBIÉN es líder de su sección para la banda de desfile, y es miembro de la Sociedad Nacional de Honores.

Michael es el vice presidente Nacional para la organización Boys to Men. 

Michael decidió buscar un puesto como miembro estudiantil de la junta porque, en sus palabras, él sabe que “la junta escolar tiene el poder para ayudar a los estudiantes”, y le “gustaría desempeñarse en este puesto para que pueda representar al cuerpo estudiantil Tomcat, en el cual esta tan orgulloso de formar parte.”

Martinez asistió a la Primaria Rollins, la Academia Magnet Fred Rodgers, y ahora es un senior en la Secundaria East.

Los miembros estudiantiles de la junta comenzarán a asistir a las reuniones de la Junta Educativa el 16 de septiembre.

Bravo o Martinez asistirán a todas las reuniones de la junta. Se desempeñarán como miembros asesores sin derecho a voto en la Junta Educativa por un año escolar.

Bravo y Martinez le darán a la junta una perspectiva estudiantil en los diálogos. Informarán a la junta sobre las actividades estudiantiles, e informarán al liderazgo estudiantil de la Secundaria East en nombre de la junta.
