The East Aurora High School Counseling Department, in collaboration with Waubonsee Community College, launched the first ever Waubonsee Week at EAHS. Waubonsee Week is a culmination week-long opportunity for students to meet with various student support organizations from Waubonsee Community College (WCC). Each day this week highlighted different organizations on campus.
On Monday, students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Student Life and Athletics. Student Life presented the various clubs and organizations students can join on campus and emphasized students to get involved while in college. Athletics emphasized that Waubonsee offers many men’s and women’s teams including eSports.
On Tuesday, Career Development spoke about how students can utilize their services to discover what potential careers they are interested in and how best to reflect that within their selected program of study. Money Matters is an organization which helps students understand how to manage their money and navigate the complexities of personal finance.
On Wednesday, we had representatives from the Latinx Resource Center which is a newly created center located at the Waubonsee Downtown Campus to help develop and support first-generation Latinx students as they navigate college life. TRIO/Student Support Services is a long-standing support organization which also helps first-generation college students in managing the expectations of college and locating relevant and necessary support for students. Adult Education helps students who may not have graduated high school to obtain their high school equivalency and assists students who want to continue to develop their proficiency in English.
On Thursday, representatives from the Access Center for Disability Resources and Waubonsee Works visited the Tomcat College and Career Center. The Access Center for Disability Resources supports incoming and current college students with 504 plans or individualized education plans (IEPs) with accessing disability resources on campus. Waubonsee Works is a grant-funded program to help students who may not have attained their high school diploma, students in foster care and others in potentially enrolling in a certificate or associate degree program.
On Friday, we had our EAHS Student Alumni Panel with several EAHS alumni to come and talk with students about their college experiences. They discussed the benefits of post-secondary education and the challenges they faced along the way. They emphasized to students to reach out when they need help and to continue to push forward even when the situation seems difficult.
